The category winner will earn $6,000 in prize money. The deadline for submitting applications, according to the competition schedule, is July 26.
Epic Games is already well-known for their groundbreaking Unreal Engine 5 programming engine. It was featured in popular games like Fortnite and the fourth installment of the critically acclaimed Kingdom Hearts series. Unreal Engine 5 has also recently received significant funding.
Using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, developers must generate new materials and scenarios for the new Mars XR Operations Support System (XOSS) environment. NASA has previously provided information about Mars that covers the full Martian day.

NASA’s mission: The goal? To locate programmers interested in assisting in the building of the Martian metaverse. The NASA MarsXR Challenge is a new competition created by NASA in partnership with Epic Games and Buendea. According to Herox, the NASA MarsXR Challenge is for developers who want to help create virtual reality experiences in the Martian metaverse (XR).
